Del Mar News

September 21, 2016
Dear Families:
Back-to-School Night:  It was wonderful to see everyone at last week's Back-to- School Night event. As you can see, we have been working hard on designing and implementing programs that are rigorous, aligned and engage students in critical thinking, creative problem-solving, collaborating, and effectively communicating their ideas and insights.
Upcoming Parent Education:  New and returning families are all invited to join us this Friday, September 23rd,  at 8:30am in the Information Media Library for a follow-up to Back-to-School Night Parent Education meeting.
Meet with Janet Cerni (Information Media Specialist), Drs. David Kover and Allan Gold (School Psychologists), David Sawyer (Assistant Principal) and me for a two-fold presentation on Staying Connected and Connecting with Your Child about School.
Part One will provide important information about how to navigate the school website to gather information about grades, homework, and other school policies and logistics.
Part Two will be an open and informative forum in which we will address ways to most effectively raise successful middle school students amidst the challenges of busy schedules, work loads, high expectations, peer pressure, hormones, and more.
Online Grades:  Grades are now online before and after school hours. Log-in information has been sent home so you can access your child's grades.  If you are new to the district, your log-in information will be sent home soon.
We encourage you to speak with your child about what she or he is learning, keeping the focus on positive and scholarly work habits and the learning itself-the questions and ideas raised in class.  The online grades provide feedback (recommended viewing: once a week or less) about whether students are: a) completing assignments on time (are they being motivated/responsible learners committed to excellence) and b) meeting standards (are they demonstrating ability to solve problems, think critically, and communicate in effective ways).
Home / School Communication:  Reminder-Teacher websites provide information on assignments and other class information. Encourage your child to speak with adults at school if she/he has questions, ideas, or needs support.  Please forward any questions or concerns you may still have to the teacher or staff member most directly involved. We are looking forward to working together this year to support your child in having a positive and productive experience at school.
Best regards,
Alan Vann Gardner, Ed.D.
Principal, Del Mar Middle School

Make-up picture day is Tuesday, September 27th.  If your student missed the original picture day or you are unhappy with their picture, please tell your child to listen for announcements on Tuesday. We'll let them know when and where to have their picture taken.  If you were unhappy with their original order or proof, please have your child bring those to school to turn into the photographer.

Protecting Those You Love:
How to Keep Your Children Safe in the Cyber World and Your Own Community
Come and get your questions answered, or just listen.
The Belvedere/Tiburon Library Program Committee is offering a presentation, important to all parents, grandparents and friends of Middle and High School age students, on ways to recognize the signs of cyber and trafficking crimes against young people.
The presentation will take the format of an interactive panel discussion in the quiet setting of the Library's Founders Room. The 4 panelists are all law enforcement officers who are actively involved in working these crimes in Marin County and, equally important, are parents themselves. They offer expertise and empathy. The panel is moderated by Linda Witong, recently retired Marin County District Attorney, and herself, actively involved in bringing these criminals to justice.
The event takes place on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 7:00 p. m. at the Belvedere/Tiburon Library, 1501 Tiburon Blvd.  Parking available around the building and the Town Hall.   Handouts will be available.  The event is free.
