    Halloween Fun at Reed

With Halloween just around the corner, we wanted to make sure that you all have the most up-to-date information regarding Halloween festivities at Reed.  We have contingencies in place rain or shine!

    General Guidelines:

    • Costumes are optional
    • Students wear costumes to school.  Please be sure to select an appropriately themed costume for your child. Costumes may not include weapons, masks, or overtly scary (this includes parents). Be mindful that our students are young and scary images can be overwhelming.
    • Clown Costumes are not permitted this year
    • After the parade students will change into their regular clothing. Costumes will be placed into backpacks.
    • Classroom parties have been scheduled at the discretion of the classroom teacher. All guests must sign in at the office before proceeding to the classrooms.

    No Rain:

    • School-wide parade is scheduled to be from 8:45 to 9:15ish on the blacktop
    • Parents and caregivers are welcome. Parents must wait on the blacktop before parade, please do not escort your child to his/her classroom either before or after the parade.
    • Teachers will bring students down to blacktop to form a large rectangle.  Parents and guests form an outer rectangle.  This will allow for equal opportunity picture taking!  Parents may not stand in the center of the rectangle as this is reserved for students only.

    In Case of Rain:

Parade will be relocated to the MPR. Due to limited space and fire code restrictions, the parade will be a

student-only event. Unfortunately parents are not invited to attend.

Classroom parties will continue as scheduled

Throughout the year we will be sharing Kimochis Challenges with the students at Community Time. Trying to fulfill the challenges gives students a purposeful way to practice the interpersonal skills they are learning at Reed.

    The Kimochis lessons help students:

    • recognize and manage their emotions

    • demonstrate caring and concern for others

    • establish positive relationships

    • make responsible decisions

    • handle challenging situations constructively

Please ask your child about this week's Kimochis Challenge!

    Whats Up at Reed?

2nd Grade Enrichment Clubs at Reed
Did you know that every Wednesday all second grade students participate in afternoon enrichment clubs? Specialists, teachers, and staff offer a wide array of club topics and students cast ballots with their top 4 choices. New topics and clubs are formed about every six weeks. Some of the clubs students have participated in this year have included: Green Team, Spanish, Gardening, Math Games, Advanced Art, Music, Sportsmanship, and Coding for Beginners. Last month the Green Team gave an amazing presentation at Community Time and taught the whole school how to recycle lunch trays. Way to pay it forward 2nd grade!

Community Time Farewell to Mrs. Dutt
Last week the entire student body bid a fond farewell to Mrs. Dutt at our Community Time assembly. Classes honored Mrs. Dutt by singing songs, sharing individual memories, and even performing one of Mrs. Dutt's favorite stories-Bark George Bark! It was a lovely tribute to one of our favorite people. Be sure to check out the blog on the Reed website.

    Strategic Planning Collaborative
On Friday, January 27th our Strategic Planning Collaborative met to brainstorm ways to enhance home/school communication and the sharing of resources. SPC parent members gave excellent suggestions and feedback which will be shared with our entire Reed team.

Del Mar's Intermediate and Advanced Orchestras Visited Reed
Last Wednesday, Reed students were treated to an amazing musical performance by Del Mar students and Mr. Max Perkoff. It was both inspiring and entertaining. We are fortunate to have such amazing talent right here in our district. Thank you Del Mar!

    January 9th Staff Development Day
On January 9th Reed and Bel Aire teachers and specialists participated in a full day of professional development training at the Academy of Science in San Francisco. The focus of the training was to understand the crosscutting concepts that are part of the Next Generation Science Standards.

Crosscutting concepts (CCCs) are ways of understanding, analyzing, and making meaning of the domains of science. CCCs equally apply across all content areas including language arts, mathematics, music and PE. It was a full and exciting day!

"Crosscutting concepts have value because they provide students with connections and intellectual tools that are related across the differing areas of disciplinary content and can enrich their application of practices and their understanding of core ideas. - Framework p. 233"

New! 5-minute Loading Zone at Reed
To help make those midday drop off and pick ups a little easier, we now have a 5-minute zone in our front inner circle. The hours for the zone are between 9:00am and 1pm. This time frame allows the buses plenty of time for morning drop off and afternoon pick up. We ask that parents and drivers make every effort to honor the time limit. Thank you!

    Strategic Planning Collaborative (SPC)
The second meeting will be held on Friday 27th January 8:30-10:00am. Collaborative members will be discussing communication and ways to optimize home-school communications. Meetings are open, however active participation is limited to collaborative members.

    What's up at Reed?

    Time to Say Goodbye
Please help us wish a happy and well-deserved retirement to our beloved librarian, Mrs. Rekha Dutt. For 17 years, Mrs. Dutt has touched the hearts of countless children and adults throughout the Reed community. Anyone who knows Mrs. Dutt has benefitted from her warm and generous spirit.  Mrs. Dutt's last day at Reed School will be January 31st at which time she will be off to India to enjoy time with family and friends and to care for her father.

Moving into the role of librarian is our very own Rachel Cahill. With an educational background as a former teacher of history and English, Ms. Cahill brings a wealth of experience to the position.  Please join us in giving a warm good bye and a welcoming hello to Mrs. Dutt and Ms. Cahill.

    Happy Holidays
The entire Reed School staff would like to wish the happiest of holidays to all our students, families, caregivers, and friends. Be well, be happy, and enjoy your time together!
