PreK REGISTRATION
-
What is PreK?
PreK is a grade between preschool and kindergarten. The curriculum is designed to meet and support the developmental and social-emotional needs and interests of 4-year-old students. The program draws from the California Preschool Curriculum Framework and readiness standards for kindergarten.
-
Who can attend PreK at Reed?
The State of California has designed a multi-year phase-in model which will provide pre-kindergarten for all 4-year-olds by the 2025-26 school year. For registration in PreK for the 2023-2024 school year, students who turn 5 years-old between September 2, 2023 - April 2, 2024 are eligible.
-
Will PreK be fully integrated into Reed School?
Yes! PreK will be fully integrated into the broader Reed School community. PreK students will participate in schoolwide events and activities as well as Foundation-supported specialist classes including PE, art, and music.
-
Does PreK follow the same calendar as Reed?
Yes. All 3 schools (Reed, Bel Aire & Del Mar) follow the same school calendar.
-
How long is the PreK school day?
PreK will be a full day. The daily schedule will align with the current K-2 schedule (8:30am-2:40pm & 8:30am-1:40pm on Wednesdays).
-
What will class size be in PreK?
2023-24 class sizes are likely to range between 18-20 and will follow a 1:10 adult to child ratio. This will include a credentialed teacher and a teaching assistant.
-
Is PreK mandatory?
No. Families with age-eligible children (turning 5 between September 2, 2023 and April 2, 2024) have the option to enroll in PreK.
-
If my child is enrolled in PreK, is daily attendance required?
Yes. PreK is part of the California public school system. Consistent with K-12, daily attendance is mandatory and will be recorded. This is an important consideration for families prior to enrollment. Some families may decide that a more flexible schedule is best for their family and choose to participate in the private preschool system.

Is lunch provided?
New Breakfast and Lunch Program
Key points:
- This change is due to a new state mandate.
- Breakfast and lunch are free for everyone.
- It is still important to complete the "Free & Reduced" Lunch Application if you feel you may qualify.
- The new vendor is The LunchMaster.
- The meals will be similar to Choice Lunch, but you do not have to place an order.
- The LunchMaster gives school districts the option of placing orders or not. At this time, RUSD has selected not to ask families to place an order in an effort to simplify the process for families. We will monitor usage and adjust accordingly.
- Any perishable breakfast or lunch food items that are not eaten throughout the week will be donated each Friday.
- The monthly menu will usually be published the week before the month begins so that families can look at the options and decide if they would like to pack a lunch or ask for the LunchMaster meal.
- Monthly Menus.
- The food will follow federal nutrition guidelines.
Breakfast times are as follows:
- Reed Elementary at 8:05 AM
- Bel Aire at 7:30 AM
- DelMar at 8:00 AM
