My professional career as an educator has been enriched by my international teaching experience in Spain, co-researching with the Kaqchikel-Maya in the highland villages of Guatemala, and service learning with tribal people in Thailand and Laos. While formally this has allowed me to study ethnography and to learn new languages, informally, these experiences have deepened my understanding of people, history, and cultures throughout the world. It is through this lens that I bring together a community of engaged learners who value and respect different and unique points of view in a supportive classroom environment.
Throughout my many years of teaching experience, I have always sought out opportunities for continual learning and growth as a professional. I have a doctoral degree in Education and a Reading/Language Arts Specialist Credential. Throughout my studies and travels, my professional focus has been in reading and literacy development as well as multicultural/bilingual education. I have a passion for inquiry-based learning as a platform for activating students' critical thinking, curiosity, and creativity.
Although I embrace international experiences, I am a life-long Californian and love all that our state has to offer. This especially includes running and hiking on Mt. Tam and cultural outings in San Francisco. I also enjoy flamenco dance, golf, tennis, and my yoga practice.
