Thank you for helping your children engage in our new live class meetings, and for overseeing their focus on completion of school work as we pass the mid-way point of our third and final trimester, a trimester like no other.

As we navigate through the evolving landscape of distance learning, we are always looking to improve and refine our practice. The number one question we are seeking to answer is, “What is best for our Del Mar students?” With that, we are excited to bring you a new schedule that students will engage in beginning on Monday, April 20th.

This has certainly been three weeks no one had anticipated. First and foremost, I hope you and your families are well and safe. While we have been challenged as a school community in new ways, I am incredibly proud of our staff and students for all of their hard work transitioning to a distance learning model so quickly.

As we have recently learned, our Distance Learning plan has been extended through May 1st, 2020. This means that we will be engaging in at least six weeks of learning from home.

We encourage you to read this letter in its entirety as it answers many of your common questions, especially in light of our Superintendent's recent announcement that Del Mar, as well as all schools in Marin County, will remain closed until May 1st.

We hope this finds you all well. We will continue to follow the recommended guidelines made by the Marin County Public Health Officer and are adhering to the shelter-in-place order, which has now been extended through April 7, 2020.

Tomorrow morning, the students will begin working from home. I have created a podcast that you may listen to now, and which will also be emailed directly to students for them to listen to in the morning.

As communicated by the district office, RUSD campuses will be closed to students beginning Monday, March 16th and resuming Monday, March 30th. We are implementing our distance learning plan in order to keep students engaged in their learning and make continued academic progress in all of their classes.

On Tuesday, Del Mar hosted a parent education program presented by Being Adept, a nonprofit organization that educates and provides middle schoolers and their parents with tools for alcohol and drug abuse prevention.

We have been instructed at Del Mar that if a student is showing symptoms of contagious illness, parents will be contacted to pick up their student and the student will be required to wear a mask in the office while waiting to be picked up.

I hope you all are looking forward to our mid-winter break scheduled for next week. Trimester Two ends soon after we return (Friday, March 6th) and our students will need to be focused and energetic in order to confidently complete work in their classes.

Next week, teachers are sending progress reports to students who are not making adequate academic progress in a course and/or to students whose habits of learning need improvement.

Specifically, we aim to Be Open, Be Kind, Be Involved and Be Brave every day in all we do. I encourage you to take this energy and momentum forward into our winter break, celebrate with your family and friends, and continue to be mindful into the new year.

As we recently celebrated Thanksgiving and are looking forward to the upcoming holidays, I am excited to highlight a few student led initiatives taking place at Del Mar which exemplify "thanks" and "giving" as well as other important qualities such as reflection, empathy, kindness and environmentalism.

Middle school is a critical time in our young adult's development of themselves. Each year, I challenge students to Be Open, Be Kind, Be Involved and Be Engaged. We want to encourage them to explore curiosities by diving deep into their learning and to push their own boundaries and sense of self.
