Sir
Winston Churchill held a historical view that the process of all
human and natural events works somewhat like a formula: Past
x Present = Future. Basically, this formula predicts the future
based on what happened in the past and what is currently happening.
But there is another way of planning for the future which is to
state it as:
Past
x Future = Present
This
is the strategic way of planning which puts the emphasis on the
present, so that everything we do has a significant impact on what
we are currently doing and helps us to create the future in the
present.
Since 1999, the District began the task of planning strategically
so that our children will be prepared for the future with the best
education possible. Our community took the job seriously
and committed time and energy for the students in our District.
Back in 1999, over a hundred members of the school and local community,
including former students, worked together over a six-month period
to create a five-year strategic plan. Through a systematic
process, a mission statement was written, core beliefs and parameters
to guide behavior identified, and objectives created that are the
ultimate outcomes for all students. Action teams identified
six strategies, which are the means to successfully reaching the
objectives. Thirty-two Action Plans were written to carry
out the strategies. Since 1999, a planning team meets annually,
over a two-day period, to review the plan and make any necessary
modifications or additions. The majority of the Action Plans
developed in 1999 were achieved by 2005. The entire Strategic
Plan was rewritten in 2005, with forty-three new Action Plans developed
to guide our work in this new century. In addition, a new
mission statement, and revised beliefs and objectives have been
authored to meet the challenges seven years into this new millennium. To
date, over 300 members of the school and local community have been
involved with the District’s Strategic Planning process.
The Board of Trustees is to be commended for embracing the concept
of "forward" planning
for the children in our District and inviting the entire community to be involved
in the process. Margaret Mead said it best, "Never doubt that a small group
of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it's the
only thing that ever has."
