Welcome To All New and Returning Families In The Reed Union School District
On behalf of the Executive Board of the PTA, I want to extend a warm welcome to all new and returning families in the Reed Union School District (RUSD).
As we begin the 2010-2011 school year, we are in solid organizational and financial shape thanks to the efforts of the prior boards led by Kelly Scannell and Jean Lin over the last few years. As President I want to build upon this foundation to further enhance the educational experience for our children through PTA’s core charter focus areas:
• Arts and Cultural Appreciation
• Fostering Parent Involvement in Education
• Promoting Healthy Lifestyles
• Supporting Teacher Excellence
It is through these areas of focus that PTA makes possible many programs including: performing arts, field trips, assemblies, math and writing programs, science fairs, awareness for the environment and teaching staff development programs to name a few. I can think of no greater example of PTA’s efforts than last year’s $100,000 commitment to help fund an extension of the successful Columbia Writing Program through 5th grade, an upgrade of the network infrastructure at Del Mar and Bel Aire to enable online live broadcasts and online learning, and the completion of the highly regarded Smart Board project for every class. Our ability to invest counter cyclically through the current economic downturn is what will enable our schools to continue to lead in the nation.
None of our efforts would be possible without the support of literally hundreds of volunteers each year. I encourage everyone to consider volunteering over the course of the year. There are plenty of opportunities in the classrooms and at special events during the year. When you attend the back to school nights at the schools and visit your children’s classrooms, please think about signing up for some of the volunteer opportunities available in EVERY class.
The PTA is primarily funded by membership dues, donations, and proceeds from our lunch program partnership with Kid Chow. I encourage every family to join the PTA- it’s only $20 per family. The feedback on Kid Chow has been overwhelmingly positive and it’s an incredibly convenient way to ensure your children eat a healthy lunch, so please sign up for the program. You can join the PTA and order lunches online at www.reedschools.org/reedschoolspta.html or in person at the various back-to-school events. You will also be able to order birthday books, yearbooks and pay for Del Mar Graduation ceremony fees at our online site later this week.
Finally I would like to close by conveying my excitement for our new RUSD Superintendent, Dr. Steven Herzog. I encourage you to meet and talk to him at the back to school events. We thought it was only fitting that Dr. Herzog be our first guest speaker on our parent education seminar series. Dr. Herzog will give us a “state of the district speech” and entertain questions beginning at 9:00am on September 23, 2010, so please save the date.
On behalf of the Executive Board, we look forward to serving you this year and wish you a happy, healthy, successful school year.
Regards,
G. Scott Nirenberski
