Meet the Superintendent

Welcome to Reed Union School District. We are very proud of the many accomplishments achieved by staff and students in the District. Student achievement is at an all time high, with Academic Performance Index scores of Reed - 942, Bel Aire – 953 and Del Mar - 924. 87.5% of our students are “Proficient and Above” in Language Arts and 86% are “Proficient and Above” in Mathematics, as measured annually on the State-mandated STAR exam

All schools in the District, Reed (grades K-2), Bel Aire (grades 3-5) and Del Mar Middle (6-8) have all been designated California Distinguished Schools in the last five years. In addition, Bel Aire achieved status as a National Blue Ribbon School and was one of 12 schools in the nation recognized for its strong technology program.

Thanks to the outstanding efforts of the Foundation for Reed Schools, we are able to provide an array of enrichment offerings for our students to compliment our strong academic program. Art, music, and physical education are viewed as necessary components to our children’s education and are taught by specialists who are credentialed in their area of expertise. Additionally, each school has a strong technology component to compliment the curriculum. Every school is staffed with a credentialed technology teacher who works with teachers to insure that technology is integrated into the classroom. To achieve the Board’s Strategic Specific Result, “Create and deliver an articulated K-8 foreign language program, which is based on the national standards of foreign language instruction, and encompasses a global perspective,” Spanish instruction is offered at the elementary level in grades 3-5 four days a week. The middle school also offers Spanish as an elective. Most recently, a plan was submitted to the Board to develop a foreign language program at the middle school that builds on the strong program at Bel Aire Elementary School. The complete report can be viewed on this website.

We believe that our job is to prepare our students for a world that has changed remarkably and will continue to change each year with technology innovations. Because of our commitment to be in the forefront of teaching and learning, we implemented the Millennial Classroom Project two years ago, providing a laptop computer to every student in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Only a year and half in to this project, we are seeing positive changes regarding students’ attitudes toward learning with a new tool to access current and relevant information quickly. Results from a survey administered to over 300 middle school students can be accessed on this website.

Parent involvement is very evident within the District. It is common to see parents actively involved in the classrooms on a daily basis. The PTA and The Foundation, both parent based, are active partners with the District to provide our children with an outstanding K-8 educational experience.

Our District motto is to “Nurture, Teach, and Inspire”. I hope as you browse through our web site you will see a multitude of examples demonstrating our commitment to student learning.

Sincerely,

Christine M. Carter
