2012 – 2013 Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration for the 2012 – 2013 school year will held be on March 20th and 21st from 8 am to 11 am in the Reed School Multi-Purpose Room. This is a great opportunity to meet other Kindergarten parents, join the PTA and order school supplies, and take care of the registration process. If you are aware of others who are new to the District, please let them know about these dates. You will find detailed information regarding what you need to bring at this link. We look forward to seeing you there!

Transitional Kindergarten Update

SB 1381 (Simitian, D-Palo Alto) was passed by the Legislature in 2010 to move up the entry age for kindergarten to September 1 from December 1, phasing it in over three years beginning in Fall 2012.  SB 1381 also created a "Transitional Kindergarten" program for the children who turn five during the transition period and are no longer eligible for kindergarten.  The Governor's January budget removed funding for the Transitional Kindergarten program for this coming year, but we are still unclear if this means RUSD must offer a TK class. The Reed Unified School District is evaluating options for students born in November 2007, and consulting with the California Department of Education on whether we are legally obligated to provide a Transitional Kindergarten program.  We will provide more information as it becomes available, and hope to have a final decision by the time kindergarten registration begins on March 20 & 21, 2012.

The schedule for moving up the entry age for Kindergarten is:

For the 2012-13  school year, a child must be 5 on or before November 1, 2012.

For the 2013-14  school year, a child must be 5 on or before October 1, 2013.

For the 2014-15  school year, a child must be 5 on or before September 1, 2014.

If your child was born in November 2007 and you are considering enrolling for Transitional Kindergarten, please contact the RUSD Superintendent’s office at 415-381-1112.

Important Update From Our School Nurse

You are probably aware of the recent outbreaks of norovirus in schools and other locations in the Bay Area.  To help prevent the spread of the virus, Marin County public schools are following the directions of the Marin County Health Department, which are based on the current level of illness in our area.  These  recommendations are not the same as what parents may have heard from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), whose guidelines are for areas with higher levels of infection than ours.  We ask that if your child has stomach flu-like symptoms, including crampy stomach pains, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and a low grade fever that the child remain at home until s/he has been fever-free without medication for 48 hours.  Children may return to school after 24 hours fever-free (again, without the aid of medication) if they have NOT had the above symptoms.

Our school community will be a safer place for all students and families when these Health Department directions are followed. Thank you for your help in preventing the spread of this virus.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
Rebecca F. Gayman, RN, BSN, PHN

Apple Visits Bel Aire

Last week Bel Aire School celebrated their recognition as an Apple Distinguished School with a visit from over 40 educators. Our students and teachers demonstrated many of the ways they use technology every day as a tool for teaching and learning. We are very proud of the outstanding job they did in showcasing the innovative use of tech tools in our classrooms.
