Measles Awareness Bulletin/Protect Your Child if you Plan to Travel This Summer
Measles, a highly contagious acute viral disease, can result in serious complications and death. As a result of a successful U.S. vaccination program, measles elimination was declared in the United States in 2000. The number of reported measles cases has declined from 763,094 in 1958 to fewer than 150 cases reported per year since 1997. However, during January 1 and April 25, 2008, a total of 64 confirmed measles cases were reported to the CDC, the most reported since 2001. Of the 64 cases, 54 were associated with importation of measles from other countries into the United States, and 63 of the 64 patients were unvaccinated.

Because of the recent outbreaks in Europe, India, and the United States, this bulletin is being sent home with the students of Marin County to let parents know of the measles outbreaks, especially if your families plan to travel during the summer.

Golden Bell Winners
Congratulations to 2nd grade teacher Paige Truax; Spanish teacher Julia Mueller; and science teacher Jason Shern, who were awarded a Golden Bell last week at the annual Marin County ceremony honoring outstanding teachers. All three teachers exemplify the best in education. We are very proud of their accomplishments.

In addition, Del Mar Technology Facilitator, Jeff Brain, accepted a Golden Bell for The Millennial Classroom Project, that provides a laptop to each student in 6th-8th grade. The committee reviewing the program commented that ‘the program is a model for the county and state’.

PTA News

As we conclude this year, I am amazed at what was accomplished. To each and everyone of you, our PTA members, parents, teachers and staff, we were able to accomplished amazing things together. We were one of the first school district to work toward being in total compliance of State Law governing school lunch programs. We funded parent education programs, field trips, performing arts assemblies, staff development and we produced two fantastic plays. None of this would have been possible without this impressive list of PTA Board members and District Committee Chairs:

Marika Bergsund, Executive Vice President
Tina Warren, Vice President, Reed Site Chair

Lori Buckley, Vice President, Bel Aire Site Chair
Marla Kelly, Vice President, Del Mar Site Chair

Sue Cawdrey, Secretary
Lisa Hovan, Treasurer

Felicia Goldstein, Financial Secretary, Reed School, Veronique Belgum, Financial Secretary, Bel Aire School, Susan Hendrickson, Financial Secretary, Del Mar School, Alison Von Lackum, Auditor, Margie Gab, Food Program Director, Kristi O’Dorisio, Membership Chair, Kim Abella, Emergency Preparedness Chair, Suzanne Carswell, New Family Welcome Chair and Jeff Slavitz, Walk ‘N Roll Chair. I wish to give special thanks to Chris Carter, Patti Stadlin and Lisa Mathews for their generous support as special board representatives to the PTA. PTA will present Mrs. Snyder with her award check of $500 and a plaque.

Have a safe and wonderful summer break.

Jean Lin
PTA President
